Mt Washington Weather Reports

July 11th was a beautiful day!   Winds were light and it was mostly sunny and bright.   The clouds would occasionally engulf us and then the skies would open up again.   It certainly felt warmer than 50F at the top but we had been hiking all day.

July 9th and 10th have low winds but rainy conditions.    Monday looks like it will be a clear day with temperatures in the low 50s!

July 4th to the 8th has been very nice on the top.

July 4th was back to something reasonable.   I guess you could consider it almost balmy for Mt Washington with a high temperature of 54.

July 2nd was just down right nasty.   Temperatures were just above freezing and the average (yes the average) wind speed was 55 mph.   Ouch!   Oh, and the peak wind was a hurricane force wind.   I don't think they were letting anyone climb up.   By contrast, general weather in Massachusetts was 85 degree temperatures with some nice gentle breezes.

The weather on June 26th is probably as good as it gets.   The high temperature was 62 degrees and almost no wind.

There is a trend towards warmer weather although on June 21st to the 23rd it looked fairly nasty.   You can view weather updates, averages, etc. at https://www.mountwashington.org/experience-the-weather/mount-washington-weather.aspx.

Current Summit Forcast (7/10)

Low pressure will slowly slip offshore today and tonight as an area of high pressure builds over the region tomorrow and tomorrow evening. The higher summits should expect to see continuing rain showers through the day today, with precipitation tapering this evening as the low pressure system moves offshore. The summits should see some breaks in fog through the day today as drier air works its way in ahead of a ridge of high pressure. This ridge will continue to build over the region, allowing for summit fog to clear completely overnightHigh pressure will dominate Monday and Monday night, allowing for clear skies and daytime temperatures warming to the lower 50s.

Some Mt Washington Facts:

    - The average temperature on the summit is 26.5 degrees Fahrenheit (-3 C)
    - Winds average 35.3 miles per hour (56.8 kmh)
    - The summit gets about 42 feet of snow per year, and typically sees snowfall every month of the year -- though it melts quickly in the summer
    - In April 1934, the observatory recorded a 231-mile-per-hour (372 kmh) wind that remains a world record for a land-based weather station.
    - Some of the observatory buildings are secured to the summit with chains to keep them from blowing away.
    - The highest recorded temperature at the top is 72 degrees Fahrenheit.
    - Temperatures atop the mountain can drop as low as -47 degrees Fahrenheit (-44 C)
    - On the clearest days, observers can see as far as Mount Marcy in New York State, 134 miles to the west
    - The peak is blasted by hurricane-force wind on an average of 110 days a year.
    - On January 16, 2004, the summit registered a temperature of −42.0 °C and sustained winds of 87.5 mph (140.8 km/h), resulting in a wind chill value of −74.77 °C.
    - In February 1969, a record 49.3 inches of snow fell during a single 24-hour period.
    - These erratic weather condition prompted Charles Brooks, the man behind the creation of the Mount Washington Observatory, to call Mount Washington as "Home of the World's Worst Weather" — a slogan the observatory makes prominent use of.
